Our History

This page highlights the history and evolution of the Epilepsy Association of Edmonton and Northern Alberta (EAENA), formerly known as the Edmonton Epilepsy Association (EEA).

65 Years of Supporting People Living with Epilepsy

Since 1960, EAENA has been committed to improving the quality of life of people living with epilepsy and their families. We provide information, referrals, support services, awareness initiatives, and education programs to help individuals and communities better understand and navigate life with epilepsy.  Today, more than 5,000 children, youth, and adults benefit from EAENA’s programs and services each year.

Our Beginnings

Our organization was established in 1960, evolving from the Western Canada Epilepsy League (Edmonton Branch). In 1961, the Edmonton Epilepsy Association was accepted as a member of the United Community Fund, now known as the United Way.

Over the decades, our organization has continued to grow and adapt to the changing needs of people living with epilepsy. While we strive to provide information and support across Central and Northern Alberta, more than 80% of our services have traditionally been delivered within the greater Edmonton area.

Celebrating 65 Years

In 2025, we celebrated 65 years of operation as an independent registered charity dedicated to supporting people affected by epilepsy in our region.  To mark this milestone, we created a special anniversary publication that looks back at our history decade by decade. The publication also brings our history to life through the stories and experiences of 11 community members living with epilepsy.

Their voices reflect the challenges, resilience, achievements, and changing experiences of people living with epilepsy over the past 65 years. Hard copies of our publication can be ordered through our office. Reach out to get your own today.

Continuing the Journey

Although our name has changed, our commitment remains the same.  The transition from the Edmonton Epilepsy Association to the Epilepsy Association of Edmonton and Northern Alberta (EAENA) reflects our ongoing commitment to serving people living with epilepsy throughout the region, including communities north of Red Deer.

Our history is built on the dedication of people with epilepsy, families, volunteers, professionals, donors, community partners, and staff who have helped shape our organization over the past six decades.

We are proud of where we have come from—and excited about where we are going next.
